Coast Guard leads launching of Maritime Week Celebration Tuesday, Sep 23 2008

TACLOBAN CITY [September 22, 2008] – The Philippine Coast Guard, together with the Philippine Ports Authority, MARINA-8 and other government agencies, yesterday launched the Maritime Week Celebration this September 22 to 26, 2008 at the Tacloban Port Area, with the theme “Go Zero on Marine Pollution, Marine Accidents/Incidents and Marine officers Shortage.”

Counting not just syllables Wednesday, Sep 17 2008

Poetry and math—aren’t they fascinating? The great misfortune is for those of who thought that the two were incompatible when they first began to be enamored with either one or the other. I was one of them. I rejected anything that had to do with numbers until my college Trigo teacher, who was my friend, piqued my pride. His name was Dr. Arles Navarra, one of those math wizards who actually worried that his students should learn from him. He said that if I could understand symbols and metaphors then I could understand sines and cosines (apart from reminding me that a failing grade would lead to the forfeiture of the school publication scholarship that I enjoyed as editor). I sought help from more numerate classmates, preferably the prettier ones, buried my nose in the abstruse Trigo textbook and thankfully passed the midterm exams.
