TACLOBAN CITY [September 22, 2008] – The Philippine Coast Guard, together with the Philippine Ports Authority, MARINA-8 and other government agencies, yesterday launched the Maritime Week Celebration this September 22 to 26, 2008 at the Tacloban Port Area, with the theme “Go Zero on Marine Pollution, Marine Accidents/Incidents and Marine officers Shortage.”
The celebration started with a Holy Mass and followed by a floral offering at the San Juanico Strait.
On the formal launching of the Maritime Celebration, PPA Regional Director Winfred G. Elizalde delivered his welcome address, and this was followed by an intermission number by the EVSU [Eastern Visayas State University] BS Marine students.
MARINA-8 Regional Director Jose Vanancio A. Vero Jr. introduced the guest speaker, Pag-IBIG Fund Manager Flordelis B. Menzon, who is also president of the Region Eight Administrator’s League (REAL).
SCPO Roman P. Aspa, Station Commander of Philippine Coast Guard Region 8, said they need to do something about marine pollution and marine-related incidents.
“This coming September 27, 2008 there will be a Coastal Clean-up at the Brgy. Anibong, Seawall particularly in the Port Area of Tacloban which will be participated by all Government Agencies,” he added.
